When I asked colleagues which software had
really made a difference to their pupils' learning in maths, there were many
suggestions. The winner of my straw poll is Omnigraph from SPA. Second was
Excel. Omnigraph is excellent value for money.

I was personally impressed with this program
when utilizing it with a Year 7 class demonstrating the effect of gradient and
the Y intercept on the movement of a linear function, and found it extremely
supportive when covering inequalities with Year 11. Class feedback in general
suggests that being able to see the effects of movement on the functions, and
the interactive nature of the experience enhances understanding. Comments also
indicated that learners found the program user friendly. The ease of use and
the clarity of the screen features will now ensure that I overwrite some of my
schemes of work to incorporate Dynamic Omnigraph rather than the program
currently in place. (Read the

Omnigraph is what secondary school maths
teachers have been dreaming about for years. Its success lies in its depth of
functions, whether from being able to automatically draw the tangent of a curve
at any point you desire, to being able to choose the colour of each separate
graph. After using Omnigraph for a good half hour you will find that it is full
of surprises. Expectations are most certainly lived up to, especially in the
variety of trigonometrical functions included, for example asinh, cosec and
cot. The Help file is superb, and any problems are easily solved by a quick
look through it. A great all-round package for any maths department.
Interactive
Omnigraph has been the only educational software I find worthwhile using.
